Microsoft Celebrates 40 Years of Tech Innovation and Evolving Partnerships

Mission-driven Innovation

Upon seeing a photo of Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems’ (MITS) Altair 8800 in a 1975 issue of Popular Mechanics magazine, two young coders named Paul Allen and Bill Gates offered to write software for the machine. The program became Altair-Basic and, as a result, Microsoft was born. Quick refresher: Altair-Basic was the first computer language program for the personal computer, and the foundation of Microsoft’s early business.

Fast-forward to the advent of the personal computer in 1981. (Personal flashback: I worked at IBM that summer. I still have an IBM PC motherboard 4.77 mhz and 64K (yes K) of memory hanging on my wall!) That year, Microsoft released its 16-bit operation system, MS-DOS. Just five years later, Microsoft launched its IPO, and by 1990 Windows 3.0 is available to the critical mass. In the mid-2000s, the world was introduced to Windows XP, Office XP, Xbox and Microsoft Dynamics, followed by Microsoft Azure, the Windows Phone and Surface Pro in the late-2000s. With each new innovation, the company’s mission serves as its guidepost: “to provide software, services, devices and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.” It’s this commitment to innovation and usability that has made Microsoft one of the few companies that can claim, with accuracy, that its products and services have changed the world. Microsoft changed how people work, play and access information worldwide.

While AssureSign hasn’t been around for 40 years (rather 15), our company’s commitment to innovation, from enhanced authentication, to mobile signatures, to delayed signatures – are all developments guided by our core mission: to simplify one of world’s most powerful actions – the signature. Bill Gates once said, “software is about providing power, but software has got to provide simplicity.” Our team at AssureSign could not agree more. Our aim is simplicity with all of our deployments, from SaaS, to on-premise to our hybrid solution. AssureSign partners with dozens of integrators and partners for compete document management for our customers.

Progress Through Partnerships

Gates said, “The success we’ve [Microsoft’s] achieved has really been based on partnerships from the very beginning.” AssureSign could say the same thing. AssureSign has always been a Microsoft shop – built on .NET, SQL Server and Windows Server. In 2009, AssureSign joined the Microsoft Partner Network and in 2011, we were early adopters when we moved from our own data centers to the Microsoft Azure Cloud environment. Our partnership with Microsoft allows us to offer our enterprise and small business customers the innovation and flexibility they need to run their businesses and get signatures more efficiently.

So it’s on this day, the eve of Microsoft’s 40th anniversary, that we tip our hats to the innovation, the mission and the teamwork that changed the world. We’re happy to be apart of it!
